Why You Should Consider Adopting a Senior Dog

When most people think of adopting a dog, they probably think about adopting an adorable puppy. Who doesn’t love a puppy? However, puppies aren’t the only dogs looking for a family. There’s something to be said for adopting an older, more experienced dog and skipping those rough years. If you’re interested in adopting a dog, here’s some reasons why you should consider adopting a senior dog.

They May Stay in Shelters Longer Than Puppies

When puppies are brought to an animal center, they are usually the first to get adopted. Senior dogs, however, are likely to be there longer because people are looking for energetic puppies; however, senior dogs need homes just as badly, if not more, than younger dogs.

They Are Loyal and Loving Companions

Many older dogs were once owned and loved by someone, so they know what it’s like to be loved and cared for. Just like puppies and younger adoptable dogs, they make loyal and loving companions.

They Are Typically Trained & Well Behaved

Generally speaking, older dogs are calmer, more evenly tempered, out of their destructive phase, and likely very good with children.

Older dogs are usually house trained and understand basic commands. Even if they aren’t completely trained, old dogs contrary to the old idiom can learn new tricks. In fact, older dogs are just as smart, but more likely to have greater attention spans, which makes them easier to train.
