Why Mac’s Grub Shak is Closing

Earlier this week, the owner of Mac’s Grub Shak in Spring Hill, Michael McCray, posted a message on Facebook letting the community know that Labor Day would be the restaurant’s last day of operation.

When asked why he was closing the popular burger and pizza place, McCray said the reasons were varied.

One was competition from an increasing number of restaurants.

“Obviously sales are miserable because of the huge influx in restaurants in the last year-and-a-half, especially burger restaurants,” he said. “Let’s just count the places within the mile of my place: McDonald’s, Burger King, Wendy’s, Hardee’s, Highway 55, Culver’s, Dairy Queen, let’s not forget about the one that really hurts me Red Robin. There must be eight places to get a burger within a half mile of my restaurant. It wasn’t like that when I opened 4 years ago. It’s just over-saturation.”

McCray also said personal issues were part of it.

“Since my sister passed away a few months back my heart really hasn’t been in the business like it should,” he said. “It’s been very difficult.”

But for those who don’t want to see the pizza-and-burger place go, McCray said there is the possibility of it staying open.

“The last year has been a struggle just to keep the lights on but there’s a possibility that another gentleman is going to purchase the business,” he said. “If he does he will probably keep the foundation of the business the same but I cannot guarantee that he will do that for sure or if we even get the deal done for sure. It looks good but not positive yet.”

Mac’s Grub Shak is known for their extensive menu, in which they feature 30 specialty burgers, unique pizza options and sandwiches.

  1. Sorry I haven’t visited MAC’S GRUB SHAK before. Actually, wish & would have, just looking at your decor, love all your 45 records. I collect 45’s, esp. from the 50’s & early 60’s. I visit my daughter in Franklin whenever I can. It’s an 8 hr. drive for me, but love to be in TN. Best of luck in your future.
