Who’s Who in Women’s SEC Basketball

By Amber Pennycuff

-Tennessee: Tennessee is now ranked no. 3 in the AP’s Top 25 Poll and fourth in the USA Today Coaches Poll in Week 3. The Lady Vols have always been known for their excellence on the court with head coach Pat Summitt and numerous talented players like Candace Parker under their wing.

This is Holly Warlick’s second year as head coach with Tennessee. Warlick was a three-time All-American point-guard at UT and an assistant for 27-years to Summit.

Last year, Tennessee finished out 27-8 all the way into the Elite 8. Five starters left with Summitt, and Warlick had an extremely young roster. Taber Spani and Kamiko Williams were the only ones to depart from the team this year, leaving the Lady Volunteers with a little older and more experienced roster.

Tennessee holds eight NCAA titles, 22 Final Four appearances, and have made it to the Elite 8 three-years in a row, thus far.

The Lady Vols are undefeated (4-0) this year and looking to go all the way. They will be an important team to look out for this year.

-Kentucky: I have to say it: Kentucky Women’s Basketball has a lot to live up to. With all the hype from the Men’s team, these ladies get left out! The Lady Wildcats share the same 4-0 record as Tennessee and are ranked no. 7 in both the AP Poll and USA Today Coaches Poll.
Last year, Kentucky finished the season 30-6, making it all the way to the Elite 8, falling to Connecticut. The Wildcats defeated the Volunteers last year, and that will be a big match-up to look forward to on February 16, 2013.
