Those of us that live in the south know that we have our own style when it comes to what we like visually. And one area of our homes we love the most are those that offer a place for family and friends to gather, like the front porch or backyard. So grab a glass of sweet tea and explore what’s trending in exterior doors so you can make your home a welcoming, southern oasis.

Glass Additions
For front doors, the traditional southern choices of doors, have been a mix of traditional and craftsman designs. These styles continue to trend among those choosing front doors for their houses even now. Many of us are familiar with wood paneled doors, but doors with this traditional design that incorporate elements like glass additions are very popular.  classic-lite-traditional
Still, there are many designs choices to make from within the design of traditional doors. Most doors come in either a 4, 6, or 8 lite divided panes, meaning they either have 4, 6, or 8 glass panes in the door. You can also choose to have designed or frosted glass panes, which can be seen in the picture above.

The Dentil Shelf
The Craftsman styled door goes back to the early 1900s with popularity and current designs coming more from the 1940s style. These doors are also traditionally designed with 3, 4, 6, or 8 glass panes. It has also been equally popular to include the dentil shelf in the design, which is usually categorized by the number of “teeth” under the shelf. This shelf adds a rustic quality to the door and would be a great addition if you are a fan of the barn door style.

Caming
Anther design choice people are choosing now is leaded caming paired with frosted glass. In fact, even Classic Doors manager, Ray Novelly, told me he chose to replace the old solid traditional style doors that was on the house he just bought with doors like these to bring more light into his very dark entry way. He says, “many people choose these types of doors because they offer privacy because the glass is beveled, but still let light into the house making the entry more inviting.”

Doors that integrate these design elements are actually some of my favorite because of the beautifully designed combination of glass and metal. Most of the traditional styles are either named for presidents or popular Italian cities such as Washington, Lincoln, Milano, and Florence. They typically come with three/fourths light leaded glass.

Double Doors
The last popular change people are doing to update their doors is to convert their door with two sidelights to double doors. Especially if they have a transom above the door, many of them get 8’ doors, which would get rid of the sidelights and the transom. The design is much simpler and for many the feel of having the 8’ doors makes it more appealing to walk through.
