Weight Loss Therapies Hope to Battle Obesity Epidemic

By Heather Listhartke

Over the last several years, Tennessee has ranked as one of the unhealthiest states in the U.S. In fact, the entire southeast portion of the United States ranks poorly. In 2014, Tennessee ranked 40th on the health scorecard created by the Commonwealth Fund and in 205, Tennessee dropped to 43rd. Only Kentucky, Oklahoma, Alabama, West Virginia, Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana are ranked lower.Locally, Williamson County, however, does much better across the board. Locally, Williamson County, however, does much better across the board. Niche, a company that ranks communities, according to how livable the area is, reports that many cities in Williamson County are some of the healthiest.

WCPK-fitness-classes-healthBrentwood, Franklin, Thompson’s Station, and Nolensville were ranked as some of the healthiest cities in Middle Tennessee, due to factors like availability of health professionals, reports Niche.com. Niche is not the only company to recognize Williamson County’s health factor. The County Health Rankings did a more comprehensive study in March, taking in data on more than 30 factors including unemployment rate, level of education available, employment numbers, housing, availability of healthy food, and lifestyles that affect the health of people.

In addition to access to primary care doctors, Williamson County residents also have access to medical professionals at places like Premier Age Management, which offer weight loss therapies and technology.

“Premier Age Management is interested in improving appearance, but it also aims to help patients control obesity and return to a healthy lifestyle,” states their site. Rose is one of the medical assistants at Premier and she can tell you firsthand how difficult it could be to lose weight and keep it off. Due to the obesity intervention strategies used, Rose was able to go from 223 lbs down to 148 lbs with a 45-day diet plan that took place 2 years ago and she is now able to maintain a healthy weight and BMI.

If you struggle with your weight, you could be paying more every year in health care costs. It is reported that health care costs were almost $1500 greater for the obese than their peers with normal weight. The reasons for elevated costs relate to caring for the heart, stroke, diabetes, some cancers, etc. that are directly or indirectly related to obesity.

“Premier Age Management and Medical Weight Loss Center carries a variety of prescription-strength medications to assist you in achieving your weight loss goals,” says Rose Reid, Medical Assistant at Premier Age Management.

The staff at Premier will determine what kinds of medications would be good for you.  Reid explained some of the appetite suppressants used in weight management:

Phentermine – indicated for short-term use adjunct in a regimen of weight reduction based on exercise, behavioral modification and caloric restriction in the management of obesity

Bontril – stimulates the nerves and brain, increasing your heart rate and blood pressure and decreasing your appetite

Bontril – a short-term supplement to diet and exercise in the treatment of obesity.
Qsymia – reduces appetite and helps you feel more satisfied with what you have eaten.

Saxenda – the first and only FDA-approved weight-loss medicine in a pen that helps you lose weight and keep it off.  It works like a hormone the body produces naturally that regulates appetite, known as glucagon-like-peptide (GLP-1). By activating areas of your brain that regulate appetite, Saxenda® may make you feel less hungry, which can lead to lower calorie intake and weight loss.
