The Advanced Placement (AP) College Board is always looking for teachers to be AP Readers.

AP Readers score the essay sections of the AP exams. In order to apply to be an AP Reader, teachers must have taught at least one college-level course in the past three years.

Teachers say being an AP Reader allows them to learn more about how the exams are scored and be able to help their students prepare.

“I’ve participated in the AP Reading for the last six years,” said Franklin High AP Calculus Teacher Tracy Harmon. “I get a chance to meet and build relationships with other high school teachers and college professors across the nation who teach the same content that I do. Through that networking connection, I can share best teaching practices and strategies throughout the year.”

Readers are compensated for training and scoring. If readers need to travel to a reading site, their expenses, meals and lodging are also covered.

“You gain so much more understanding of the exam and the rubrics used to grade the free responses, which truly helps you in the classroom guide your students in the right direction,” said Centennial High AP Spanish Language Reading Teacher Debbie Galloway. “My scores definitely were much better after having gone to the reading, and they continue to be excellent.”
