July 29, 2025 – More than 200 WCS high school students earned their Seals of Biliteracy in 2025, the most in district history.

Two hundred and thirty-eight students earned either a Silver or Gold Seal. The Seal of Biliteracy is awarded to students who have a high proficiency in speaking, reading and writing in at least one language other than English. The Silver Seal is awarded by the State, and the Gold Seal is a district recognition for students who go above and beyond.

“Students who earn the Seal of Biliteracy can advocate for themselves at colleges, which can lead to earning college credit or waiving language requirements,” said WCS World Language Curriculum Specialist Christi Gilliland. “In today’s global economy, being bilingual is a highly valuable skill. The Seal celebrates students’ cultural heritage and also promotes cross-cultural communication.”

Students earned their seals in any of 14 different languages, including Spanish, Chinese, Hindi and more.

Students must show evidence of English and world language proficiency through exams in order to earn the Silver Seal. To earn the Gold Seal, students must score higher on those exams and show intercultural engagement through participation in an opportunity that requires the use of a second language.

“Throughout my high school career, I have volunteered at elementary school STEM nights around three times each academic year,” said Independence High alum Titus Bonesteele. “Volunteering at these nights has allowed me to interact and teach kids from all types of backgrounds, and speaking Spanish has made the experience much more memorable not only for me but for the kids and their parents as well.”

Current WCS students interested in learning more about the Seal of Biliteracy should reach out to their school counselor or world language teacher for more information and registration.
