The district’s longest-serving teacher Brentwood High’s Harriet Medlin was honored for her years of service during the August 20, 2018, Williamson County Board of Education meeting. She has served as a teacher in WCS for the past 50 years and continues to teach at Brentwood High School.

Four students from across the districts were honored for earning a perfect ACT composite score including Namrah Ajmal and Emma Rutherford, Brentwood High; William Henke, Independence High; and Zachary Drake, Page High.

Fairview High’s Mechatronics Program was named the Tennessee Association for Career and Technical Education (TACTE)  Secondary Program of the Year.  Their teacher is Kevin Sizemore.

Westwood Elementary’s Hanna Hyche won the Tennessee Safety Patroller of the Year for 2018.

The WCS Communications Department was recognized for winning three awards from the National School Public Relations Association. The group earned a Golden Achievement Award for its work with three video series: Digital Dangers, Don’t Drive Distracted and Every 1 Counts.

In the Superintendent’s Report, Dr. Mike Looney shared that the district is serving more than 40,000 students in Pre-K-12 this year. He also updated the Board on the start of the new school year.

In the Board Chairman’s Report, Gary Anderson reminded the Board that the Policy Committee meeting has been moved to September 6 with the Board Retreat scheduled for September 19.

In New Business, the Board:

  • Approved to support the administration in awarding the athletic wear contract to Mathews Team Sports.
  • Approved five 2018-2019 School Board Budget General Purpose School Fund Amendments including Carryforward Reserves, Re-Appropriating Renaissance High School’s State Grant, Re-Appropriating Fairview City Donation, the United Way Grant for Raise Your Hand Program After School Tutoring and the LEAP Grant.
  • Approved a General Purpose School Board resolution for CTE lease purchase agreement.
  • Approved a Progressive Truancy Plan.
  • Approved a request to apply for Waiver of State Law Per High Performing School Districts ACT.
  • Approved the Student Request for Exemption of Compulsory Attendance Law.
  • Approved five Board policies on first reading including Tobacco-Free Schools, Graduation Requirements, Semester and Final Exams, Criminal Background Checks and Student Wellness.

In Other Business, the Board:

  • Approved recommended field trip fee requests.
  • Approved one policy on second reading, Student Transportation Management.
  • Approved the 2018-2019 Annual Agenda.
  • Approved Sick Leave Bank Trustees.
  • Approved outstanding purchase orders for school activity funds.
  • Approved construction of a Westwood Elementary shade structure.

The next regular meeting of the Williamson County Board of Education is scheduled for Monday, September 17, 2018, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Administrative Complex.
