Vols Weekly Game Preview
Tennessee Volunteers vs Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets
Monday, September 4, 7:00 PM on ESPN
Mercedes-Benz Stadium – Atlanta, GA
What to Watch to for:
The Tennessee Vols kickoff the 2017 campaign in the brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium as part of the “Chick-Fil-A Kickoff” vs Georgia Tech. Butch Jones enters his fifth season as UT head coach and is coming off back to back 9-4 campaigns. However, this season has big implications as the Big Orange fan base is split on feelings about their head coach. Yes, three consecutive bowl wins is more than the Vols have done in over a decade, but they squandered away the SEC East title last season with inexcusable losses to South Carolina and Vanderbilt.
A win over Georgia Tech can set the tone for an important season full of unknowns. The Vols have lost 70-percent of last season’s touchdowns to the NFL (and Baylor). A new quarterback will make his first start Monday night – expected to be junior Quentin Dormady. Redshirt freshman QB Jarrett Guarantano is also expected to see time.
A big question is how will Tennessee handle the tricky triple-option offense of Georgia Tech? It’s uniqueness and deception causes fits to some of the most disciplined defenses across the country. The Vols will have to do it without starting linebacker Darren Kirkland Jr. who underwent meniscus knee surgery this week. Also, of note: starting left tackle Drew Richmond is serving a one game suspension for violation of team activities.
Tennessee is currently favored by three points.
