Veteran and volunteer honored by Spring Hill judge

On Tuesday, Spring Hill Municipal Court Judge Blair Morgan took time before the docket to honor in open court a longtime volunteer and military veteran.

Retired Col. Herbert Grogan, who has volunteered as a citizen’s advocate for the court for five years now, was honored along with his wife, Paula Marie, for their service to the court and the country.

As the citizen’s advocate, Grogan arrives early before each court session, assists the judge in pre-court set-up duties, runs the overhead projector to show court instructions and court videos to enhance traffic safety (such as the “Texting While Driving” video), and is available to answer citizen questions about the Spring Hill Municipal Court and its procedures.

“We have been enormously honored and blessed to have a man of such high caliber and heroic accomplishment as Col. Grogan to serve our Court,” Morgan said.”Col. Grogan represents the citizens and their interests at the table, to ensure that their voice and perspective is heard regarding court affairs and court procedures.”

Grogan, a veteran of the United States Army, enjoyed a long and illustrious 36-year military career. He served in Vietnam and commanded NATO Camp Bootmere in Bosnia. He also was stationed at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado, and had two tours of duty at the Pentagon. He also served at the Redstone Arsenal Space and Missle Command in Huntsville, Ala., and in Operation Desert Shield.

He taught for four years at the Army War College in Pennsylvania.

After he retired from military service he began volunteering for the Spring Hill Municipal Court.

He is a board member of both the Downtown Association of Spring Hill and the Spring Hill Arts Commission, and served as the treasurer of “Project Fire Belle,” the organization of citizens that restored Spring Hill’s antique 1957 Ford F-700 fore engine.
