For the 2025-26 school year, Tennessee Public Chapter 347 states that parental permission is not required for students to participate in a preventative, developmental school counseling program.

This Tier I programming includes classroom lessons, schoolwide assemblies, character education, registration meetings, college and career days, crisis response and periodic student check-ins.

As always, parental permission is required for Tier II and Tier III services. These services include small groups, ongoing individual counseling, lunch bunch and counseling sessions with STARS counselors.

Families should contact their child’s school counselor with any questions.
