This Sunday, Oct. 23, the Franklin Polo Academy Team will face off against the University of Kentucky, the South Eastern Intercollegiate number two seed.
UK will bring a strong team lead by Tom Huber, who was the most recent recipient of the coveted United States Polo Association (USPA) Interscholastic Player of the Year award. He will be joined by teammates Ben Lynch, who recently played with the Airstream team in the Greenwich 20-goal season, Nick Vidal, a 3rd generation player from Pennsylvania and an infantryman in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Franklin Polo Academy will feature crowd favorite Stevie Orthwein, who has represented the USA in the Federation of International Polo World Championships numerous times and now makes Franklin his summer home. Joining the trio will be former polo professional, Zulu Scott-Barnes of Nashville and Cathy Brown, one of Tennessee’s highest ranked female players.
For the first time in Middle Tennessee history there will be a one chukker exhibition prior to the match featuring local woman players/students of the Franklin Polo Academy.
The Franklin Polo Academy aims to find within this group of players the seeds of the first Middle Tennessee interscholastic polo team.
Under USPA rules for interscholastic polo competition, participants must come from schools within a hundred-mile radius of each other and be affiliated with a registered USPA affiliate club like Franklin Polo Academy.
James Armstrong owner of FPA, explains that the USPA is making a big effort to introduce the sport of polo to as many young people as possible. Some of the top universities in the country, such as University of Virginia, Harvard, Yale, Texas A&M, UK and Cornell have intercollegiate teams. Many of these university teams recruit players from the USPA interscholastic program and often are able to give admission assistance.
