Tennessee Soccer Club (TSC) and Special Olympics Tennessee (SOTN) are excited to add another layer to their relationship starting this spring 2019 season by providing soccer programming for SOTN athletes.
Beginning in April, SOTN and TSC will work alongside one another to restart SOTN’s soccer program, which is not been in place for the last several years. The program will consist of FREE clinics for all Special Olympic athletes over a five-week period. TSC coaches and high school age players will lead the soccer instruction at each of the clinics and SOTN athletes from all across our area are invited to participate.
“We have had a great working relationship with Special Olympics Tennessee for the last several years,“ said TSC Tournament Director & Event Coordinator Jimmy Drain. “It only made sense to try and extend our relationship to support them on a more consistent basis and we are really excited about the new program this spring.”
On an annual basis, TSC and SOTN come together for TSC’s Soccer-A-Thon, a fundraising event conducted by the club that sees families raise funds for TSC and SOTN over the course of approximately ten weeks. Toward the end of the fundraising window, TSC players, coaches and families come together and play soccer in one-hour time blocks. Staff and athletes from SOTN join in on the fun during the event, with TSC players and coaches hosting a free clinic for the SOTN athletes followed up with a fun scrimmage match.
Last week, a Special Olympics athlete named Matthew came to speak to a group of TSC players to share his story (photos below). This interaction is an example of how TSC and SOTN athletics can learn from and help one another, which both organizations agree is the ultimate goal of their partnership.
TSC will hosted the 2019 Soccer-A-Thon February 23-24. Just like last year, a percentage of the money raised will go to SOTN to support them in their mission. More information on the Spring 2019 Soccer Program can be found here.
