April is Autism Awareness Month and Nashville-based paper goods company Tiramisu Paperie is partnering with A Moment’s Peace Salon & Day Spa to offer limited edition notepad-and-pencil gift sets to raise funds for Autism Tennessee. With messages including, “Different Not Less,” “Dare to be Different,” and “I Love Someone with Autism,” the gift sets retail for $10, with every dollar donated to the nonprofit.
The cause is personal for Tiramisu Paperie Owner Lisa Sarmento, whose 18-year-old son Michael was diagnosed with autism at three years old. “Being the parent of a child with special needs can be exhausting, isolating and scary,” said Sarmento. “Through Autism Tennessee, we are able to support other local families going through the same thing.”
“We are thrilled and honored to have these two companies come together to support the more than 40,000 Middle Tennesseans who are on the autism spectrum,” said Babs Tierno, executive director, Autism Tennessee. “It is the mission of Autism Tennessee to enrich the lives and experiences of individuals on the autism spectrum, their families, and their surrounding community through support, advocacy and education. Our community partners are critical in supporting our mission to ensure we are the voice of autism for Tennessee.”
Sarmento launched her distinct line of cards and gifts following the loss of her mother and grandmother in the same year. She found herself wishing for something that reflected the broader range of emotions experienced in grief. So she created her own cards and found her messages resonated with others. Soon after, son Michael joined the business – helping sort, pack and ship orders – while also providing his mom with a constant source of inspiration and new ideas.
“While Tiramisu Paperie was born out of tragedy, it’s a brand that honors my mother and grandmother’s memories and reflects our family’s big personalities. We’re Italian and loud, and sassy and spunky,” said Sarmento. “I know they would love the products.”
