Tennessee’s Best Business Cities Include Franklin, Brentwood

Among 85 cities analyzed by Nerdwallet, Brentwood and Franklin were named among the top 10 best places to start a business in Tennessee.

Nerdwallet analyzed cities with populations of at least 5,000 and at least 500 businesses. Brentwood ranked 5th and Franklin ranked 8th.

Health care is the dominant industry in Tennessee, along with the automobile industry. The music industry and tourism are some other big ticket businesses in the state.

According to the Nerdwallet article:


“Tennessee’s workforce is going through a dramatic change. As the need for traditional manufacturing diminishes, more highly skilled technical workers are needed to drive the economy.

“Education is something that has been sorely lacking as part of our economic development portfolio, but great steps are being taken to mitigate and overcome our problem,” says Matthew Murray, associate director of the Center for Business and Economic Research at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.”

Every place that made the top 10 list was in Middle or East Tennessee. The overall scores were based on business climate and local economic health.

Brentwood ranked 5th with the lowest unemployment rate and highest annual median income among cities analyzed. Brentwood also had the highest housing cost.

Franklin placed 8th on the list, being the largest city in the top 10 and also the one with the most businesses. Franklin had the second highest housing cost and the second highest annual median income on the top 10 list.
