TDOT Begins $62 Million Bridge Repair Project This Weekend

If you’re traveling into downtown Nashville this weekend, you’ll notice parts of I-40 will be completely shut down in order for TDOT to repair several bridges.

Originally built in 1968 – the I-40 bridges over Herman Street, Clinton Street, Jo Johnston Avenue and Charlotte Avenue in downtown Nashville need immediate attention. The $62 million rehabilitation project is called Fast Fix 8. Eight because there are four twin bridges and fast because TDOT is using an innovative process called Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC).

The construction will be finished in months instead of years but it will require shutting down the interstate completely for short periods of time. This will happen over 13 weekends scheduled July 2015 through June 2016. During the 13 weekend closures, I-40 will be shut down from the I-40/I-65 split on the east side to the I-40/I-24 split on the west side. The Demonbreun Street Exit will be kept open for westbound traffic only.  The interstate detour will be the same for all 13 weekends.  Bicycle and pedestrian traffic should follow directional signage near the work zone.

This weekend’s closures are:

Friday, July 24 at 8:00 p.m. through Monday, July 27 at 6:00 a.m.

Friday, July 31 at 8:00 p.m. through Monday, August 3 at 6:00 a.m.

All work is weather-dependent. A final decision for each closure will be made the Wednesday before the scheduled work.

Future closures are dependent upon project progress and will be announced as scheduled.
