At the request of 21st District Attorney General Kim Helper, TBI Special Agents are investigating the circumstances that led to an officer-involved shooting Saturday night in Williamson County.

Initial reports indicate a Williamson County deputy spotted a vehicle that was the subject of a BOLO alert for an individual out of Marshall County, and attempted to stop the vehicle. After a short pursuit, the driver crashed the vehicle in woods at the end of Mullens Road. The initial investigation indicates that as the deputy attempted to apprehend the driver, the man, later identified as Dalton Elam of Florence, Alabama, displayed a knife. The deputy fired his weapon, striking Elam. He was transported to a Nashville hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation, as TBI Special Agents continue to work through the night to gather any and all relevant interviews and evidence. As in any case, our investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General throughout the process for her consideration and review.

As is our policy, the TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to their respective department.

Any updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
