According to Metro-Nashville Police, Ravenwood High School teen Riath Al-Shawi, 18, died Monday morning after a fatal car accident.

Metro-Nashville Police Department’s new release said Brentwood’s Al-Shawi died after an accident Sunday night in a 2001 Honda S2000 roadster on Hopedale Drive in South Nashville.

The driver, Zeyad Hussein, 21, of Nashville, was seriously injured.

The investigation to this point shows that Hussein was traveling too fast for the wet road conditions when he lost control and struck a large brick mailbox. Neither man was wearing a seatbelt.

Al-Shawi died early today at Vanderbilt University Medical Center. Hussein is being treated at Skyline Medical Center.

There was no indication at the scene of alcohol or drug involvement.

This news comes on the heels of a former Summit High School student dying over the weekend. Centennial coped with the loss of its senior wide receiver Jim Cheek two weeks ago during Thanksgiving week.

No other information about Al-Shawi has been released.
