Summit & Stewart’s Creek Battle Friday

Williamson County Football
By: Amber Pennycuff

With just one win under their belts this season, the Spartans are hungry for another victory. 1-4, Summit will take on 0-5 Stewarts Creek.

Stewarts Creek is a brand new school to Rutherford County and lies in the Division 1 Class AAA, District 7. District 7 houses power-teams like undefeated Blackman and Oakland (5-0).

The Red Hawks opened their doors in August to students and established a brand-new era for the school. Located in Smyrna, the school’s student body is made up of students from around Rutherford County.

Head coach David Martin was chosen to kick-off the new tradition as head coach. Martin is a 21-year veteran with Goodpasture and accumulated 211 wins and three state championships over the course of his reign. He resigned from Goodpasture in December.

The red-and-black took on Summit’s district rival, Ravenwood (4-0), to kick-off the 2013 season and fell 55-6.

With Summit entering an entirely new class, (Class AA to Class AAA) this season poses as an entirely new growing experience for the Spartans.

Taking a win against old district rival Spring Hill (1-4) at the beginning of the season, the Spartans have lost to Page (1-3), Independence (3-2), West Creek (2-3), and Centennial (3-2) to accumulate four losses over the season.

Summit’s Dee Hunter certainly does not seem to be down about the outcome of the season thus far. In fact, he is making big plays and putting points on the board for the Spartans each game.

The versatile Hunter rushed 21 times for 119 yards and had the lone touchdown against Centennial last Friday night. His 40-yard touchdown tied the Spartans up 7-7 with the Cougars. However, the senior, Hunter, only completed 6 of his 14 passes and had three interceptions.

The Red-Hawks have fallen to each team by more than 40 points each time but managed to score 72 points throughout the season. Summit has only fallen once by more than 40 points to district rival Independence but has only managed to put up 56 points on the board within the season.

To ensure a “W” for the blue-and-orange, the Spartans will have to capitalize on mistakes made in past games and gain more yardage on the field with a clean playing strategy.

The Williamson Source will keep you up-to-date on Summit as it kicks-off at 7 p.m. over in Smyrna on Friday night.
