Behind the legs of running back Tai Carter, Summit overcame a historic evening by Shelbyville Central quarterback Grayson Trammel for a 47-37 road win on Friday night.
Trammel threw for over 600 yards in a performance that’s believed to be a TSSAA record.
But Carter ran for 250 and four scores as the Spartans improved to 7-1 and clinched the Region 5-5A title.
Trammel scored on a 4-yard keeper with 8:04 left in the third quarter, cutting the Spartan lead to 32-30 after the point-after.
Avery Brown’s 62-yard touchdown catch from Trammel on a third-and-12 put Shelbyville Central up for the first time all night
Again, Carter answered, with a 1-yard plunge to put Summit up 40-37 after his ensuing 2-point conversion run with 6:18 left to play.
On Central’s first snap after that, Trammel completed another long throw over the middle. But the Spartans forced a fumble that Matt Szymanski recovered at the Golden Eagle 42.
Carter scored for the fourth time of the night, this one coming with 2:11 left, on a 2-yard run on the ensuing drive. The extra point gave Summit a 47-37 lead.
Behind the running of Carter, Summit drove the field on the game’s first drive, then got about a 13-yard scoring run from Christian Jolley for the game’s first touchdown. Quinn Slaughenhopt’s point-after made it 7-0, Spartans.
Shelbyville’s Dalton Corley answered with a 34-yard field goal on the ensuing drive, after Summit’s onside kick attempt failed.
Summit scored a second touchdown in two possessions when Carter ran left through an enormous hole for a 42-yard touchdown, though Slaughenhopt’s point-after was blocked.
Carter added a third Spartan touchdown with 25 seconds left tin the first quarter on a 12-yard run. Carter started right, was hemmed off by defenders, then cut back to the left where he found more running room on a sprint to the goal line.
Shelbyville Central’s Jeremiah Wyatt cut into the lead with an 83-yard touchdown catch with 11:22 left before half.
But Summit’s Jatevion Hayes returned the ensuing kickoff 98 yards to answer.
Shelbyville punched back immediately, with an 83-yard pass setting up a 2-yard scoring run by Cody Martin.
Central then scored on a 36-yard touchdown pass to Luke Davidson with 4:23 left in the half. The extra point was missed, keeping the Summit lead at 26-23.
After a long run by Carter, George Odimegwu’s 15-yard run along the right side put the Summit lead at nine, as a 2-point conversion failed.
Carter appeared to play through a minor injury, sitting out short stretches of the second half.
Summit is off next week before it visits Centennial on Oct. 20.
