Spartans Look to Declaw Wolverines

After their bye week, Summit (1-4, 0-2) returns home to challenge regional opponent La Vergne (4-2, 2-1). The Wolverines are Tennessee’s newest 5A school after dropping down from 6A last year. The Spartans will look to contain top 50 football prospect Maleik Gray for La Vergne.

Spartans Offense Set on Sprinting Past Wolverines

Before their bye week, Summit was able to hold it close for the first half with Class 5A number one in the state in rival Independence before the Eagles were able to pull away late. This week, Summit’s wing-T offense looks to rely on running back Tai Carter, who passed 100 yards on 16 carries and had a touchdown reception. The Spartans have called Michael Zakrzewski in critical situations and he has responded by connecting with his receivers with 6 touchdowns. Carter has been his favorite big play receivers, but Zakrzewski has also found Christian Snyder, Tyler Palmer, and Jay Richardson. The Spartans will face a challenge against a Wolverine defense giving up 17 points per game.

In this game, a Spartans defense that has given up 32 points per game will look to respond from giving up more than 40 points in 3 straight games. In these three games, the Spartans have struggled against the run. Inversely, the Wolverines have averaged 32 points per game on the strength of their running game, led by running back Nick Jones and quarterback Keianthony Conner. When Conner has taken to the air, his top receiver has been Gray this season.

This season, Summit has shown improvement with the experience of the past few seasons. Coming off the bye week and with the top two teams in their region behind them, the Sparty Party looks to get into full swing for the final stretch of the year.
