Summit Outlasted Henry County And Earned Spot in State Title Game

The Summit Spartans traveled to take on the Henry County Patriots in the Semifinals of the high school football playoffs. Summit entered play after knocking off Beech 36-29 in a thrilling game last week.

The Spartans claimed one of the spots in the championship game after they beat Henry County tonight 35-21.

The Summit Spartans received the ball first to start the game and made quick work with the football. They scored on their first play from scrimmage as Brandon King took the handoff and scampered into the end zone. The Spartans led 7-0 just twenty-three seconds into the game.

Henry County responded with a nice drive of their own. However, the Summit defense stood tall and forced a field goal. Henry County would not connect on the field goal and the score remained 7-0 Spartans.

The first quarter came to an end with the score still 7-0 in favor of the Spartans. Henry County had the ball early in the second quarter but was forced to punt it back to Summit.

Both teams were able to get a little movement with the ball, but neither really was able to pull away. Henry County did tie things up at 7 as they scored a touchdown with thirty-one seconds remaining before halftime.

In the second half, Henry County received the ball first. They scored on a long pass play to take a 14-7 lead in the third quarter.

Summit responded on their following possession with a long passing touchdown of their own as Destin Wade connected with Brady Pierce to tie things up at 14. The Patriots had the ball back but were forced to punt.

On the ensuing Spartan possession, Destin Wade would connect with Brady Pierce again for a touchdown. The Spartans would miss the PAT though keeping it a 20-14 game. The third quarter came to an end as Henry County was driving.

Summit got the ball back and drove down and scored a touchdown as Destin Wade scored on a rushing touchdown and converted the two-point conversion to go up 28-14.

Henry County would not go quietly though as they scored on their following drive. It was 28-21 with six minutes and twenty-eight seconds remaining in the game. The Patriots would recover an onside kick following their touchdown.

The Summit defense held strong this time tough as Henry County was unable to get the game tying score. Summit took over with just over two minutes remaining. They were aiming to run out the rest of the clock.

Summit would ice the game away though as they scored one more time on a long run play from Destin Wade to increase their lead to 35-21 with thirty-eight seconds remaining in the game. The game would come to an end with Summit punching their ticket to the championship game.
