Outlook:

Three years ago when Brian Coleman was hired as the second head football coach at Summit, he had a plan for the program.

The Spartans suffered through a winless season in Coleman’s first year in 2014 but improved by four games in 2015. Then the breakthrough year came last season. Summit had their first winning season as they went 7-4 on the year and made the playoffs for the first time in school history as they made the Class 5A playoffs in 2016.

Nine starters return (4 on offense, 5 on defense) as the Spartans will try to gain back-to-back 5A playoff appearances.

Leading rusher Tai Carter will again spearhead the Spartan wing-T offense after rushing for 1,358 yards and scored 14 touchdowns for Summit. He will also start at cornerback for the Spartans.

Summit will return three senior starters back to the offensive line in Kody Davis, Trevor Kuehl and Mason Leatherwood.

Fellow senior tight end Nick Johnson and Jatevion Hayes will be the top targets in the passing game for new sophomore quarterback Ethan Cash.

Five starters return on the defensive side including two on the defensive line in junior Brayden Stem and senior  Chance Jarosz.

Robert Holmes and Nick Johnson will be the leaders at linebackers after both had good junior years.

Summit will open the season on the road against rival Spring Hill on August 18 and then will host Williamson County Schools in Independence and Centennial.
