Members of the Summit High Culinary Arts Program got a chance to put their skills to the test at Franklin’s Great Americana Barbecue Festival August 27.
The festival, hosted by The Franklin BBQ Society and The Franklin Noon Rotary Club, brought the Williamson County community together at Harlinsdale Farm where the Summit students were in charge of running a burger stand.
“I think we are able to help the Rotarians because the students are experienced and really enjoy helping and being involved in community events like the BBQ Festival and the Rodeo,” said SHS Culinary Arts Teacher Marsha Johnson. “We are fortunate because they are always quick to help our program. They mentor and support and teach the students and are wonderful supportive business partners for the Summit Culinary Arts Program.”
In all, 26 students and a few parents got together to run the stand from 10 a.m until 8 p.m.
The stand not only gave the students a chance to demonstrate their delicious dishes, but it also provided them with an opportunity to raise some money for the school.
Summit dealt with a little bit of bad weather for the festival, but it provided a good learning experience for the students.
“The unseasonable high temperatures and thunderstorms created an especially insightful experience for the students because they were able to observe typical problems faced and solved by caterers and food truck vendors in the real world,” Johnson said. “It was a great day.”
