Summer Staycation Ideas: Summertime at Cheekwood

There is lots for the whole family to enjoy this summer at Cheekwood.  From giant bug sculptures, “stickworks” in the garden, family night and the Andy Warhol exhibit in the galleries.  All right here in our backyard!

David Rogers’ Big Bug exhibit is now on display until August 31st.  The most popular by far is the Butterfly Experience where children under 12 enjoy the play sculpture depicting the transformation from a caterpillar to a butterfly.  Most of the children enjoyed hanging out in the mesh  wings.  Be sure not to miss the sign for each bug for some interesting bug bytyes!

Patrick Dougherty is this year’s Martin Shallenberger Artist in Residence, a sculptor who uses his love of nature to create giant, tangled works made entirely from tree saplings.  It’s quite the sight to see and the kids love it as well.

Trains are back!  The exhibit which was once the feature a couple of years ago is back on a smaller scale featuring two outdoor trains with one of them being Thomas the Train running on three separate tracks.  Keep checking back on this exhibit as the Cheekwood engineer told us they would be adding a couple of more trains this summer.

After taking a walk thru the garden, visit the Andy Warhol’s Flowers exhibit in the gallery.  It features nearly a dozen screen prints from the original Flowers series as well as paintings.   “Not only is this an opportunity to view some of Warhol’s most beautiful and rarely seen work, it’s a chance to view it in relationship with the floral abundance of our gardens. Our natural setting provides a dimension to this exhibition that will truly enrich the visitor’s experience with both art and nature, and that’s exactly what we’re here to do.”  said Jane O McLeod, President and CEO of Cheekwood.
