Student-Athletes Named Gatorade Tennessee Players of the Year

Two WCS high school student-athletes are among Tennessee’s elite. Fairview High’s Brandon Parrish was named the Gatorade Tennessee Boys Soccer Player of the Year, and Independence High’s Robert Hassell was named the Gatorade Tennessee Baseball Player of the Year.

Brandon is a midfielder on the Fairview High boys varsity soccer team. He was nominated by Fairview High boys soccer coach Shane Smith, who says Brandon continues a family tradition of Williamson County soccer players.

“When Brandon arrived as a freshman, we knew he was going to be special,” said Smith. “He is by far the heart of our offense and one of the most talented kids I’ve been blessed to coach.”

Robert is a pitcher for the Independence High varsity baseball team. He was recently named the Baseball Player of the Year at the 2019 WillCo Awards.

“Robert is one of the top players in the state,” said Independence High baseball coach Mike McLaury. “He’s a great ball player, and he’s being rewarded.”

As state winners, both Brandon and Robert will receive $1,000 to donate to a youth sports organization of their choosing. They will also receive a trophy. Gatorade Players of the Year are chosen based on athletic excellence, academic achievement and exemplary character.
