State Changes Tax Free Weekend Date

tennessee sales tax weekend

back to school

Recent legislation has changed the date of Tennessee’s annual sales tax holiday. Tennessee’s sales tax holiday will now be one weekend earlier than it has been in the past. Starting in 2016, and continuing annually, the sales tax holiday will be held during the last Friday in July through the following Sunday. The dates for this year’s sales tax holiday are July 29 through July 31, 2016.

The new law did not change any other aspects of the sales tax holiday. As in prior years, consumers will not pay state or local sales tax on clothing, school and art supplies that cost $100 or less per item and computers that cost $1,500 or less. Tennessee had its first sales tax holiday in 2007.

  1. Well, I think this will bad for those folks that get their income on the first of the month. These are the people that probably need it the most. Not to mention retail sales will more than likely be down. Just saying, 1st week in August, enveryone had an opportunity.

    • People can budget all summer for this. If you know about it ahead of time it shouldnt be a money issue.

  2. Since most schools don’t even have their supplies lists posted yet, this is truly idiotic. I was honestly expecting to see this a week later because I’ve not been able to see the savings on school supplies because my school systems have never ever had the lists posted. And we’ve lived in 3 different counties in Tn, so it’s not just one district.

    • I absolutely agree. I know not all schools start back at the same time… But it’s crazy to start it earlier!

  3. Thus is good for us..Sullivan County starts back to school August 1, 2016…. It will give us a head start on school clothes and basic supplies!!!!

  4. So thankful for this change. Schools begin in early August and gives families the opportunity to shop prior to school starting
