St. Jude Dream Home Celebrates Fathers

Meet Harper- After Harper was born with neuroblastoma—a cancerous mass in her belly, and later, several more in her liver—her parents turned to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. St. Jude has developed treatment plans that have helped push overall survival rates for childhood cancers from less than 20 percent when the hospital opened in 1962 to 80 percent today. And because the majority of St. Jude funding comes from the public, St. Jude has the freedom to focus on what matters most—saving kids regardless of the financial situation.

St. Jude doctors placed baby Harper on a chemotherapy plan carefully designed to give her the minimum effective dosage. After four rounds of chemotherapy, Harper’s tumors were shrinking and continued to shrink until they were gone.

Today, Harper is back in her Tennessee home, a happy and busy 18 month old. She returns regularly to St. Jude for checkups. “We can’t even come up with the words to describe how amazing St. Jude is,” said her mom. “We feel so lucky to have been there.”

As Father’s Day approaches we asked, Owen, Harper’s Dad, what it means to him to be a father.“Being a father means that I get to have the best job on Earth for the rest of my life. You never get to retire, you never receive a salary, but you get to come home to a hug, a kiss, and a ‘Hi Daddy.’ To me, nothing could ever top that.”
