Spring Hill Mayor says GM $148M V8 Engine Will Boost Local Economy

City of Spring Hill officials congratulate General Motors on its announcement today that it will invest $148 million to produce V8 engines for the first time at the GM Spring Hill Manufacturing plant.

The Spring Hill plant is designed to repurpose flexible machining and assembly equipment so that it can start building Small Block 6.2L V8 engines for many of its pickup trucks and SUVs later this year to meet market demand, which will retain about 200 jobs.

“Spring Hill has long been known primarily as a commuter suburb with most of our residents working in Nashville, Franklin and Brentwood, but we want people to know that Spring Hill is evolving and we are gradually creating our own good jobs here in Spring Hill so many of our
residents won’t have to drive out of town to work,” Spring Hill Mayor Rick Graham said in response to today’s GM announcement. “And the more jobs we create here at home means less long-distance commuter traffic on our roads, which helps to address the larger traffic issues that come with our city’s rapid growth.”Rick Graham

The investments in the local GM plant are part of $709.4 million in investments GM has announced since ratification of the UAW-GM national agreement in 2015. Since 2010, GM has announced investments of more than $1.35 billion for the Spring Hill operations. GM Spring Hill Manufacturing currently has 2,460 employees (2,083 hourly and 377 salaried), and is continuing to hire for the production of the new Cadillac XT5 and GMC Acadia.

“These expansions help us as a city as we go out and market for quality retail businesses to locate here, as well as other corporate office relocations,” said Spring Hill City Administrator Victor Lay. “And we have already seen some of the results of GM’s previous big announcements, such as the hundreds of jobs at the two new auto part manufacturing facilities – Magna and Comprehensive Logistics – that opened last year on Beechcroft Road; and the 600 jobs over the next five years announced last year by Ryder.”

The 6.2L truck engine is currently available in the Chevrolet Silverado Crew Cab, GMC Sierra Crew Cab, Yukon Denali, Yukon XL Denali and the Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV. Other GM sites building the 6.2L V8 for trucks are Tonawanda, N.Y., and St. Catharines, Ontario.
“In years past, during much of the time since the original Saturn plant became GM, the plant was building mostly one type of vehicle terrain and small engines, so it’s good to see a greater diversity of parts being made for other types of vehicles, such as the parts they make at GM Spring Hill for the Corvette,” Mayor Graham said.

“Now, they’ll be building V8 engines for pickups and larger SUVs for the first time at this plant. That gives us some comfort to know that if fuel prices rise in the future or the economy sinks, even if the local plant decided to pause production of the V8 engines, it still has a diverse line of vehicles, engines and parts that it is producing for a wide range of other vehicles to help ensure production can continue. They don’t have all of their eggs in one basket, and that’s very smart. That can help to sustain the ebb and flow of the unpredictable car market.”

Equipment repurposing will begin immediately with Small Block 6.2L V8 production scheduled to begin during the fourth quarter of 2016. Having flexible equipment and machining is allowing GM to add capacity in a timeframe faster than the typical two to three years required to add a new engine line.
