Page High School made their first appearance in the TSSAA Soccer State Championship on Friday afternoon. The Patriots (18-7-1) had plans to make the most of their first trip by bringing the hardware back to the Rudderville Community in Franklin. Standing in their way, the Greeneville High Greene Devils (20-4-2).
In the first half things were off to a great start for the Pats, as they grabbed the first goal of the match and controlled possession. Even with Page dominating the ball in the first they never could cash in on anymore of their opportunities at goal. The Patriots would have to settle for a narrow lead of one, nil heading into the half.
The second half would be the polar opposite of the first for the Pats, as Greeneville deciphered the Page’s defensive code early in the second. With the game now knotted at one all, an entire season for two teams came down to 20 minutes. In those 20 minutes Greenville would once again crack the Page code, taking the 2-1 advantage all the way to end of regulation.
Although the Patriots suffered a loss in the program’s biggest match, the team handled defeat with humility and dignity. Clapping as Greeneville received their trophy. A trophy Page juniors and underclassman will surely be fighting for in the future.
