Sizzle & Sliced America’s Greatest Grilling Guru

Saturday, June 6th the parking lot in front of Macy’s CoolSprings Galleria, was sizzling with Weber Grills preparing for the competition between six contestants picked from all over the country. They were competing to win $10,000 and be crowned the, “Greatest Grilling Guru in America.” In addition, the winner received a trip to the Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks in New York City. Hundreds of people submitted recipe’s to compete and only six were chosen.

The judges of the contest were from Macy’s Culinary Council, Chef’s Michelle Bernstein and Stephanie Izard.  Contestants had one hour to prepare the recipe they had submitted to the contest. Then the judges got to work as each contestant finished, sampling the creations.

While the contest was under way, those attending were treated to live music and emcee Wells Adams from Lightening 100 kept the crowd informed, and entertained. For the foodies in the crowd, they were not disappointed, as guests were able to sample food prepared by the celebrity judges.

One lucky contestant just happened to be from Franklin, Tn. While most of the six had previous experience with cooking contests, this was the first contest local Adam P. had ever been been a part of. Unfortunately, about half way into the competition Adam sliced his hand and an EMT had to get him bandaged up to finish. Even with the delay, he was able to complete his recipe within the hour.

Adam prepared Korean Barbeque Duck Crepe-Orito and Sweet Potato Salad with Ginger Dressing. While his duck was cooked to perfection, the judges were not as thrilled with his preparation of the sweet potato salad.

After the judges completed their decision they gave each contestant some positive, and some negative feedback.

Ultimately, it would be Eric H. from Overland Park, Kansas who would walk away with the guru crown. Eric prepared Brazillian Chicken Lollipops and Spicy Caipirinha Rum Glaze. For added effect, he also served the judges a cocktail made with the Brazillian Cachaca.

There were several local businesses in attendance giving guests sweet treats, smoothies, pizza and much more.
