Part 4: Battle Ground Academy (BGA)

Battle Ground Academy is a unique environment for students with the campus centered by an 1829 Federalist style home which houses the administrative offices. The Glen Echo two-story structure was a camp ground for Civil War soldiers and the land enjoys a deep history for those interested. The school is comprised of the Middle School and the Upper School in this same location in brand new state-of-the-art facilities. These new facilities afforded the excellence in education and programs to continue. Additionally, in 1998, Battle Ground Academy acquired the former Harpeth Academy, and it became the BGA Lower School on Franklin Road. Currently, the school operates the two campuses and has the three divisions—Lower School, Middle School, and Upper School.

BGA was founded on the principles of character, scholarship and excellence. With that in mind they are constantly growing and adapting to make a better learning environment for their students. The open campus format allows students to feel relaxed and fosters creativity. Activities planned for this year include Grandparents and Special Friends Day on Friday, April 19th, and the 2012 Arts Council Silent Auction; “BGA on Broadway will take place on Saturday, April 6th. These events help fund the school and keep the community involved in the education of our youth.

Currently the school has been focused on evaluating their safety practices and searching for a new Head Master. Current Head Master Dr. John Griffith is leaving to take on a post at Ranney School in New Jersey and the campus is in search for a successor. The search has been narrowed to three candidates who will be visiting the school in the near future to meet the staff and BGA community. Each candidate will be on campus for two days providing opportunity for meetings and interaction.
