School Board Tries for Guns in Parks Resolution

At a special meeting on Monday, the Williamson County School Board discussed the new legislation that allows guns to be carried in any public park in the state of Tennessee.

Although permit holders will now be allowed to carry a firearm into any government owned public park under the guns in parks bill, that does not mean they can legally carry to a school athletic events. Since many Williamson County School athletic events take place at public park facilities, the school board has been concerned about the ‘guns in parks’ bill.

The worry of the school board is that the ‘guns in parks‘ legislation may cause confusion for permit holders when they know they are allowed to take a weapon onto public park property, since it is not always clear that an event is a school event.

Superintendent Mike Looney put forward a resolution to allocate $7,500 to make signs that would remind attendees that guns are prohibited at school athletic events no matter what.

The resolution failed to pass at this meeting, but plans for another special meeting are in the works.
