Scene Around Town: 2015 Heroes in Heels

Heroes in Heels

On Tuesday evening at The Factory in Franklin, the YMCA hosted its 15th Heroes in Heels events. Hosted by Steve Hayslip, an event that showcases  26 women who walked the runway celebrating their survival of breast cancer. Each of these women, displayed to  the audience what a strong woman, a survivor looks like and how each of these women live each day to the fullest. It was a fashion show but it was far more than the clothing these women were wearing,I would dare say most would not recall the fashion but yet the “fashion” in which these women presented themselves on the runway.  We saw many high-fives,heads held high, and overall countenance of joy. Two women that have been instrumental in providing the ABC program to the YMCA, the very first coordinator,Wendy Hardaway, and Nancy Brown, current coordinator of the program  ended the show on the runway.

A total of 625 women have been helped by the ABC program. Throughout the 15 years, 2400 survivors have completed the ABC program.

The YMCA offers the ABC (After Breast Cancer) program free to those who are recovering from breast cancer. After Breast Cancer provides comprehensive nutrition, exercise and wellness services free of charge to breast cancer patients and survivors. During the 16-week program, participants receive full access to the Y, a custom wellness plan designed by a Pink Ribbon Certified personal trainer, nutrition counseling from a registered dietitian and encouragement and support from caring staff members as well as fellow breast cancer patients and survivors.
