Sales Tax Increase Proposed to Franklin Leaders for Schools

The Franklin Board of Mayor and Alderman considered a potential half-percent sales tax increase in the city Tuesday night.

County Mayor Rogers Anderson proposed the idea to the board as a way to raise revenue for schools.

He sounded the board out on a hike that would create nearly $15 million and split evenly between the city and schools.

The county has been looking at ways to raise funds for schools and new school construction without increasing property taxes. Franklin would get $7.4 million of an estimated $14.8 million raised by a half-cent sales tax increase.

However, the board did not respond enthusiastically and no action was taken.

“I do not think you are going to get the support you need,” Beverly Burger, Alderman 1st Ward, said. “I think it is going to be a hard sell to the residents. Their concern is that it is only a temporary fix.”

Franklin already pledged to split the cost of construction for a $2.36 million middle school on Henpeck Lane earlier this month.
