Less than 20 new vehicles earned a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety (IIHS), the highest rating awarded by the IIHS. IIHS has increased the requirements to earn a Top Safety Pick+ award.

“The stricter guidelines focus on how well passengers in the front seat are protected in frontal collisions that simulate hitting a tree or pole, which the IIHS calls the small-overlap test. Before this year, only the driver’s side faced this test,” says Consumer Reports.

To qualify for Top Safety Pick+ status, a vehicle must receive:

  • Good ratings in the driver-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests
  • Good rating for headlight illumination
  • Good or Acceptable rating for passenger-side small-overlap crash tests

Of those that received the coveted Top Safety Pick+ status is the Lincoln Continental, which received Good ratings in the Crashworthiness tests and a Superior rating in Crash Avoidance and Mitigation. Learn more here.

Mercedes received the award for 3 models – the 5 Series, E-Class (sedan) and GLC; Subaru’s Impreza, Legacy and Outback are on the list, as well as, the Kia Forte (sedan) and Soul and Hyundai Santa Fe and Santa Fe Sport. And the predictably reliable Toyota Camry is on the list.
