You go all out on game day, so why settle for lukewarm beer? These spiked drinks can be made ahead in mason jars: Just twist on the lids and pack with ice in a cooler, and you’ve got impressive cocktails that won’t interfere with your pregame rituals (body paint, grilling and bean-bag toss.) Pace yourselves—these drinks are enormous.
1. Alabama: The Yellowhammer Slammer
(pictured above)
Ingredients
2 oz. vodka
2 oz. rum
1 oz. amaretto
4 oz. orange juice
7 oz. pineapple juice
Directions
Mix vodka, rum, Amaretto, orange juice and pineapple juice.
Serve in a 20-ounce cup over ice.
While Gallette’s, the famous college bar near the University of Alabama, hasn’t divulged the recipe for its renowned Yellowhammer cocktail (the restaurant sells 4,000-5,000 per home game, co-owner Jeff Sirkin says), we paid homage with our own concoction.
2. Lousiana State University: LSU Lemonade
Muddled blueberries give this spiked lemonade the vibrant purple color so synonymous with LSU. It makes for a refreshing drink when you’re pre-gaming in the Louisiana heat.
Ingredients
2 oz. vodka
1 handful blueberries
1 pinch sugar
12 oz. lemonade
Directions
Add the vodka, blueberries and sugar to the bottom of the glass and use a spoon to muddle (or mash) everything, just until the sugar has dissolved and the blueberries are broken up.
Add ice and lemonade, stirring to mix in the vodka-soaked blueberries.
3. University Of Florida: Gatorade Margaritas
Swamp Juice was a close contender, but ultimately, we decided that the school that invented Gatorade needed a drink that featured it prominently. Finally, a ‘rita loaded with electrolytes.
salt (for rim of glass)
3 oz. tequila
3 oz. lime juice
8 oz. blue Gatorade (or orange)
Directions
Dampen the rim of the glass and roll it in salt (if you want). Fill glass with ice.
Mix tequila, lime juice and Gatorade. Pour into glass.
4. University Of Georgia: Bulldogs’ Spiked Sweet Tea
Georgia fans know Sweet Tea, and on a blazing game day, there’s no better way to stay cool. You could go for plain old lemon slices, but oranges add a subtle burst of tropical flavor to the mix that’s anything but boring—just like a Bulldogs game.
Ingredients
2 oz. vodka
12 oz. sweet tea
1 orange, sliced (optional)
Directions
Mix vodka and sweet tea.
Pour into a large glass filled with ice. Garnish with orange slices.
5. Notre Dame: The Luck Of The Irish
You wouldn’t expect Jameson—or any whiskey, for that matter—to go so smoothly with lemonade, but together, the two pack one awesome punch, much like the Fightin’ Irish.
Ingredients
2 oz. Jameson or other Irish Whiskey
10 oz. lemonade
1 slice lemon (optional)
Directions
Mix whiskey and lemonade.
Pour over ice and garnish with a slice of lemon.
