R&B Singer Percy Sledge Has Died

Percy Sledge,most known for the song, “When  a Man Loves a Woman,” died on Tuesday, April 14th in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, reported Rolling Stone magazine.

Cause of death was liver cancer as told by his manager, Steve Green.  Sledge was 74 years old.

His chart topping hit, “When a Man Loves a Woman” was his debut single and one of Rolling Stones Greatest Songs of All Time in 1966.   He was only one of the first to come out of the Muscle Shoals, Alabama music scene.

Later Bette Middler, Michael Bolton and Esther Philips went on to  cover Sledge’s song scoring hits, Bolton’s  cover made it to a number 1 hit.

Sledge was honored with the Rhythm & Blues Foundation’s Career Achievement Award in 1989 and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

The singer toured consistently throughout his life. The BBC reports that he is survived by his wife and children.
