Ravenwood High Varsity Dance Returns from UDA Dance Camp

The 2013 – 2014 Ravenwood High School Varsity Dance Team just returned from an intense, four day dance camp held by the Universal Dance Association (UDA) at the University of Alabama, Birmingham. The Ravenwood High School Varsity Dance Team are the six-time and reigning State Champions.

Intended to kick-off the dance program for the upcoming school year, UDA camps are designed to strengthen the skills of high school teams by teaching advanced technique and choreography.  Competitive high school teams from across the Southeast attend to prepare for both high school performances and competitions. “Over the course of the camp, the girls are expected to learn an extensive amount of material in a short period of time. This is both physically and mentally challenging” says Kirstin Hawk, RHS Dance Team Coach and Choreographer.

The RHS Dance Team has won the State Championship title in the Jazz category six times since the dance team was formed eleven years ago.  That is a significant accomplishment for such a young team. “This group has five returning members, and ten rising freshman. I am looking forward to the relationships that these girls make over camp. They have really big shoes to fill, and the bonds they form during camp will last throughout their next four years,” said Kristin Payne, RHS Teacher Sponsor.

As for captains, Stephanie Seibert, Keely Paxton, and Morgan Stengel, they agree this camp has brought them closer together while boosting their skills. Some individuals received “Pin It Forward” awards, all team members won Blue Ribbons for routines, and the three captains were chosen for the UDA All American Team. The team was awarded the coveted Leadership Award, received the highest ranking of Superior Trophy, and their home routine received 2nd place overall.
