Ravenwood High School Dance Teams Racks up Awards

The 2014–2015 Ravenwood High School Varsity and Junior Varsity Dance Teams just returned from a highly successful dance camp held by the Universal Dance Association (UDA) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.

UDA camps signal the start of a new season providing dancers the opportunity to learn new skills, improve technique, and challenge themselves with advanced choreography.

“Camp gives our dancers a chance to showcase their talent while also taking a look at some of our competition” says choreographers Kirstin Hawk, RHS Varsity Dance Team Choreographer. Valerie Reynolds, RHS Junior Varsity Dance Team Choreographer adds “This is the first time we have taken a JV team to camp, and the first time for them to compete which is incredibly exciting.”

The RHS Dance Team has won the State Championship title in the Jazz category six times. Ravenwood Athletics Director, Coach Patrick Whitlock, states “Ravenwood has a broad variety of sports available to our student athletes. Sometimes the bigger sports are more widely known, but these ladies have more state championships.”

Sophomore, Susanna Dunn was crowned the Drill Down Queen. All dancers received Blue Ribbons, the seniors and captains were chosen for the UDA All American Team, and both the JV and Varsity teams received Superior trophies with a respective first and second place finish for their home routines. Most importantly, the RHS Dance Teams were given the Leadership Award which is voted on by all the dancers who attend the camp as the team they would most like be on.

Six-time State Champions, the RHS Dance Team highlights the special talents of RHS students in the area of dance, promotes school spirit by supporting the RHS athletic teams, and enhances the reputation of Ravenwood High School throughout the local community.
