It was a crazy ride for Ravenwood last year, and this year’s opener against Centennial on Friday suggests more of that is in store for 2018.

Ravenwood quarterback Brian Garcia hit Anthony Holmes with a 35-yard touchdown with 6:07 to play, providing the winning points in a 35-28 victory on the Cougars’ home field.

The defending 6-6A champs trailed by 14 twice, but came back tor a road win. It avenged last year’s 26-23, season-opening loss to the Cougars.

Ravenwood dominated the stat sheet, however, with 490 yards of total offense to Centennial’s 256. Garcia was 22 of 31 for 281 yards passing, while Ross Johnston ran 28 times for 170 yards and a score. Jordan Smith rushed eight times for 87 yards and a touchdown. Holmes led the team in receiving with six catches for 98 yards and three scores.

Centennial’s Joey Gustafson had a monster night, catching four passes for 186 yards and two touchdowns. That accounted for all but seven of new quarterback Marcel Grayson’s passing yards.

Jariel Wilson, the Cougars’ two-way star, led the team with 10 carries for 55 rushing yards. Sean Hannon had 5 1/2 tackles, and 1 1/2 for loss, Wiatt Barber added 5 1/2 tackles and 2 1/2 sacks, while David Amos led the team with six tackles and an interception.

Playing from behind all night, Ravenwood tied the game at 28 with eight minutes left.

Both teams got off to a fast start, with Centennial leading 21-14 at the end of a quarter.

Ravenwood stays on the road at Siegel next week.
