New Year’s Resolution: Put Down Your Phone

How many times growing up did you hear your mother talk about manners at the dinner table.  Today, we have other issues besides elbows on the table.  Now, we bring mini desktop computers called smart phones with everywhere including the dinner table and beyond.

We wanted to find out more about technology etiquette for the Holidays, so we referred to our  National League of Cotillion ” “The  Official Book of Electronic Etiquette for the answer to when is it impolite to use your cell in the company of associates or friends?

Here are their tips for  cell phone calls.

  • Do not receive a call when someone has an appointment with you – or when you have guest.  It’s rude!
  • Remember to charge your batteries  It is not polite for a conversation to be interrupted  due to low power.
  • Never use a cell phone on a date. ( could also go for family time as well) It shows disrespect to your company. Turn off the phone unless you are expecting an emergency call.
  • Don’t ignore the waitperson in a restaurant or a retail clerk because  you are using your cell phone.  You  are infringing on that individual’s valuable time.
  • If you are on a speaker phone, always inform the person you are talking with.  It respects their privacy.
  • Lastly, if your children are involved in sporting events, give them your full attention.  This is not the time to conduct business or chat with friends.

Enjoy your time with family and friends this holiday.  Keeping these tips in mind could make way for meaningful conversations.
