Each day, we will bring you a photo of the day, showcasing the sights of Williamson County (and beyond). Whether it’s a photo of a local landmark, a park, a photo from an event or just a great photo from the area, we want to showcase our local communities throughout the next year.
Photo of the day: The Cumberland River Compact has led four major cleanups of Mill Creek in South Nashville and one of its tributaries in the last two months, removing over 1,400 pounds of litter from the creek and its banks. Some volunteers accessed the stream banks by foot, while others accessed Mill Creek’s confluence with the Cumberland River by kayak. These cleanups directly prevented large amounts of pollution from entering the Cumberland and contributed to the Compact’s growing total of over 13,500 pounds of litter removed from waterways in 2025 alone—and just over 252,000 pounds since 2017.
“When you consider that the average Nashvillian creates 7.6 pounds of household trash per day, it really starts to put into perspective how much trash the Compact is removing from waterways,” said AnnaLePetri, the Compact’s Volunteer and Events Coordinator.
“Thankfully, we have community members and many corporate volunteer groups that are getting their hands dirty and improving habitat and water quality.”
Cleanups like these are a big part of the Compact’s growing, award-winning volunteer program. In 2024, the organization led more than 100 volunteer events and recently launched a new corporate team-building program to connect local businesses with meaningful community service. Through the program, companies can take part in customized, water focused activities—ranging from stream cleanups on foot or by kayak to native tree plantings and environmental lunch-and-learns.

You know what, these photos of the day are nice and everything, but why are the images so low resolution. It’s the photo of the day for Pete’s sake, put in a high resolution image that if I click on it I can really see a beautiful big image.
