Join the Fun, Get Ready for PARK(ing) Day 2017

from parkingday.org

Parking Day is back.

Or, rather PARK(ing) Day, the annual worldwide event where artists, designers and citizens transform metered parking spots into temporary public parks.

The Williamson Chamber of Commerce is promoting the day locally, which is September 15.

“By reducing the number of cars on the road, that leaves more space for more inspiring, vibrant areas such as parks, trails and recreational complexes,” Williamson, Inc,. wrote. “Everyone, including neighborhood associations, companies and government agencies, is invited to participate in PARK(ing) Day.”

The chamber will hold a contest to see what group comes up with the most “creative, appealing” PARK(ing) space.

Last year the chamber hosted a Mobility Week, with PARK(ing) day a large part of it.

The PARK(ing) Day project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. Since 2005, PARK(ing) Day has evolved into a global movement, with organizations and individuals (operating independently of Rebar but following an established set of guidelines) creating new forms of temporary public space in urban contexts around the world.
