The WCS Parent Academy is returning to help demystify some of the post-secondary process for families.
The purpose of the Parent Academy is to discuss how families and schools can support students on their journeys after high school. In August and September, the district will host a series of Zoom sessions focused on various topics.
The dates and topics for the sessions are listed below:
- Tuesday, August 19, at 6:30 p.m. – The ACT recently changed. We will explore those changes and how they might impact next steps. We will also consider other high stakes tests and discuss factors that impact testing and how families can support students as they prepare and improve.
- Tuesday, August 26, at 6:30 p.m. – There is not one set path. In a rapidly shifting world, we will explore tools to help consider post-secondary pathways while trying to illuminate some of the steps on those paths.
- Tuesday, September 2, at 6:30 p.m. – We will discuss factors beyond testing that could impact opportunities for post-secondary success while also considering how families and schools might support that development.
- Tuesday, September 16, at 6:30 p.m. – Admission essays, scholarship essays and recommendations can all impact students’ opportunities. We’ll discuss how to get the most out of these writing opportunities. We will also discuss how the writing process can complement the interview process.
- Tuesday, September 23, at 6:30 p.m. – This session is based around questions that students with special services, such as IEP, 504 or other needs, should ask when considering colleges.
- Tuesday, September 30, at 6:30 p.m. – Each post-secondary opportunity has a cost and a benefit. We will explore those while also considering timelines for applying.
There is no cost to attend any of the sessions, but families are asked to register beforehand. Families may register for individual sessions online.
