O’More will be heading to Lewisburg, TN from July 29th to August 3rd for the seventh consecutive Studio on the Square. The project is a hands-on design program that promotes revitalization of struggling town squares. Students get to engage with local clients during the weeklong project.

This is the second year the college has partnered with the Lewisburg Downtown Alliance Merchants and property owners around the Maury County Courthouse and is the first time for them to revisit a community. “We had such a positive experience in Lewisburg last year and found many good projects, some of which are beginning implementation,” said David Koellein, O’More’s interior design department chair. “Studio on the Square is a really interesting and unique aspect of what our program does. We had a smooth partnership with the local community there last year and we’re excited to return.”

At the end of the week students present their art boards and concepts for property owners to choose and decide on implementation. “This is a wonderful opportunity because students are able to practice interviewing skills, create as-built drawings and design within a budget under a very tight deadline,“ said Rebecca Andrews, interior design instructor. “The idea behind Studio on the Square is to challenge our students to exercise their knowledge of interior design while revitalizing our great communities. Community service as a part of their career path is a rewarding lesson.”

Eight individual projects comprise the endeavor with a small restaurant, a theatre and the local chamber of commerce as some of the clients. The First Presbyterian Church fellowship hall is the temporary studio for the students. There is nothing like this experience and O’More is always striving to give the best possible education to its students.
