Janice Elizabeth Freeman passed away peacefully on September 8, 2025 at the age of 77. Janice was born December 11, 1947 in Nashville, Tennessee. She graduated from John Overton High School in 1966 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Carson-Newman College in 1970. Janice dedicated 45 years, her entire working career, to the State of Tennessee Department of Revenue retiring in 2016. She loved music and spent many hours playing piano. Other hobbies include reading, watching game shows, HGTV, and was proficient in crossword puzzles, Sudoku, and working any kind of puzzles. Her primary focus was her study of genealogy, spending countless hours researching our family tree and becoming our authority on family history.
Janice is preceded in death by her parents, John Vess and Ruth Hoover Freeman, both of Nashville, Tennessee. She is survived by her brothers, Jack (DruAnne) and David (Doug); nephews, Clayton (Caitlyn) Freeman and Daniel (MaCall) Freeman; great nieces, Lucy Freeman, Garner Freeman, Tatum Freeman, Talia Freeman and Lane Freeman; great nephew, Wells Freeman and Baby Boy Freeman on the way; and many cousins.
To honor her life, Nathan Parker, Pastor of Woodmont Baptist Church, will conduct a graveside service September 15, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at Mapleview Cemetery, 411 Maple Street, Smyrna, Tennessee, where Janice will be buried next to her parents.
The family acknowledges and is grateful for the devoted and loving care provided by Sarah Cannon Research Institute, Belmont Village Senior Living and Alive Hospice. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Alive Hospice, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville, Tennessee 37203.
