New Area Code, New Dialing Rules Begin For Middle TN

Beginning Saturday, Feb 28th, Middle Tennesseans will change how they make phone calls.

Due to an increase in demand for telephone numbers, the Middle Tennessee area is getting a second area code–629. All calls made must include an area code plus the 7-digit telephone number or your call will not go through. If you forget to dial the area code, you will receive a recording instructing you to hang up and dial again.

The Tennessee Regulatory Authority is responsible for overseeing the area code overlay. New phone users will start getting assigned the 629 area code beginning March 28th.

Residents using the 615 area code will not be required to change numbers, but equipment that is set with seven digits, such as fax machines and Internet dial ups, will need to be reprogrammed for 10-digit phone numbers.
