State Passes Another Alcohol Delivery Law

The state recently passed a law that allows the delivery of alcoholic beverages by third parties. Companies like GrubHub and Delivery Dudes that pick up food from area restaurants and deliver it to you are making plans to start delivering alcohol straight to your door.

The legal ability to deliver alcohol was already available to liquor stores, but most did not see a way to make it financially viable and have not latched on to that service. With the new legislation, third parties will be able to deliver the alcohol for them, thus making the alcohol delivery business more of a possibility for consumers.

Drivers that deliver alcohol will have to be licensed by the Alcoholic Beverage Control board through training, which is standard for anyone serving alcohol in restaurants. The new law will go into effect on July 1.

“Our whole point with this is to accompany a nice mean with a bottle of wine” said Rob Welter, an owner of Delivery Dudes. “The biggest thing is just to make sure that the people that order are of age and we do everything right just to make sure they get what they want.”

The delivery fee for ordering alcohol through Delivery Dudes will be the same as the standard restaurant fee, which is $7 if paying a card and $5 if paying with cash. According to the law, customers will be able to order up to a gallon of alcohol per person, but it is unclear whether or not multiple people at the same location should be allowed to order alcohol multiple times.

When ordering alcohol, customers will be asked to verify age when placing the order, and also provide proof of age, such as a driver’s license, when the order is delivered. Also, the same person that places the order will have to be the one to pick up the order at the door.
