Nashville Up-and-Comers at Westhaven Porchfest

For an event rooted in all things local, Westhaven has lined up Nashville up-and-comer’s Boy Named Banjo and Tim Akers & The Smoking Section to close out the main stage at Porchfest, on Saturday, June 20th, from 4:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. at the Westhaven community in West Franklin.

New digital options have been created this year to keep attendees informed of up to the minute happenings.  An updated dedicated website,, will have schedules of all performers and directions to navigate the community.

Boy Named Banjo was born from an after school jam session in the back of a pickup truck by high-school friends Barton Davies and William Reames.  To help create the original folk sound their sought, the boys asked longtime friend Willard Logan to join them in 2011.

Their debut album, The Tanglewood Sessions, drew inspiration from personal relationships, experiences with nature, literature, and trips to the Buffalo River, and was recognized for its truly raw sound.  Since the album’s release in 2012, Boy Named Banjo enlisted the skills of drummer Sam McCullough and bass player Abe Scott. Their sophomore release, Long Story Short, has been supported by a large following of loyal and enthusiastic fans from all of the county, which have come together to vote the band into this year’s Bonnaroo stage.

Tim Akers & The Smoking Section is a true collaboration of Nashville’s best studio musicians, who share a common love of all things funk.  Their music highlights the funk sounds of bands like Earth, Wind & Fire, Rufus & Khan and Al Jarreau.

Akers, a songwriter, arranger and producer from Nashville, has lent his talents to some of the industry’s most successful performers, including Kid Rock, Kenny Loggins, Michael McDonald and Keith Urban, and is currently on tour with Big Machine recording artist Rascal Flatts.

Akers, and his Smoking Section, are a group of Nashville’s finest studio-players, all who share a common love of funk music.  The band carries 16 pieces and creates a high-energy show unlike any around.

Their new album will be released later this summer.
